Minimum Flap Retraction Speed
Minimum recommended speed to begin flap retraction. Vobs + 5. Only a factor above 140,00lbs during engine failure above V1 takeoffs.
Flaps Up Safety Speed (FUSS)
Minimum speed recommended for normal operations with the flaps retracted. Vobs + 25.
Best Climb Speed
The higher of the speeds for maximum rate (altitude/time) of climb or the flaps up air minimum control speed.
ATC Ceiling
The altitude at which maximum rate of climb at maximum continuous power and best climb speed is 500 FPM.
Cruise Ceiling
The altitude at which maximum rate of climb at maximum continuous power and best climb speed is 300 FPM.
Service Ceiling
The altitude at which maximum rate of climb at maximum continuous power and best climb speed is 100 FPM.
Climb Gradient
The ratio of the change in height during a portion of a climb, to the horizontal distance traversed in the same time interval.
• Expressed as a function of altitude gain per nautical mile. Ex. 200 FT/NM = 200’ up for every nautical mile forward. 1NM = 6080’. * Vertical speed to comply with requirement – Ground Speed/ 60 x FT/NM. Ex. 150KTS/ 60 x 200FT/NM =500 FPM. • Expressed as percent climb gradient is an altitude gain for every 100 feet of horizontal travel. Ex. 3.3% = 3.3’ up for every 100’ forward or 200 FT/NM (3.3 x 6080/100). * Vertical speed to comply with requirement – Ground Speed x % Gradient. Ex. 150KTS x 3.3 = ~500 FPM. • Expressed as a ratio of the horizontal distance to the vertical distance. Ex. 30:1 = 30’ up for every 1’ forward or 200FT/NM (6080/30). • Climb gradient is improved with a headwind component, and reduced with a tailwind component. |
