chronic granulomatous disease
genetic immunodeficiency disease caused by inactivating mutations of one of the subunits of NADPH oxidase. In this disease, certain types of bacteria cannot be killed adequately.
CGD |
granuloma
Tightly structured spherical inflammatory lesion characterized by central necrosis and containing microorganisms and infected macrophages in various stages of maturation and activation. Interspersed with these are activated CD4 T cells, and surrounding them are epithelioid fibroblasts and activated CD8 T cells. Granulomas ultimately undergo fibrosis and calcification of the outer mantle.

inducible nitric oxide synthase
One of three isoforms of NOS, the enzyme that makes nitric oxide, and that is synthesized by phagocytic cells as part of the microbicidal response. The other forms are found in neurons and endothelial cells and are constitutively expressed and regulated by intracellular calcium levels.
iNOS |
lysozyme
Enzyme that degrades the bacterial cell wall component peptidoglycan.
NADPH oxidase
Phagocyte enzyme that upon induced assembly creates reactive oxygen intermediates.
Phagocyte oxidase |
primary granule
Specialized intracellular vesicle in neutrophils derived from lysosomes and which contains antimicrobial peptides, proteases and other components.
Azurophilic granule b/c of its dye-staining properties. |
reactive nitrogen intermediates
highly reactive and toxic compounds generated from L-arginine by inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS).
reactive oxygen intermediates
Highly reactive and toxic compounds generated from molecular oxygen by NADPH oxidase, superoxide dismutase and/or myeloperoxidase.
secondary granule
Specialized intracellular vesicle in neutrophils that contains the membrane-bound components of the NADPH oxidase
Specific granule |
