Parental DNA
|
Original DNA, that which is being copied or reproduced in daughter cells.

DNA Polymerase
|
Enzyme that builds new strands of DNA by adding nucleotides one at a time in the 5' to 3' direction.

Leading Strand ӂ Lagging Strand
|
Leading Strand is one of the new strands of DNA formed, its formed continuously. Lagging strand is built in pieces that are eventually joined together (identical to leading to strand and Parental DNA).

|
Enzyme that joins together the pieces of DNA in the lagging strand.

Lagging Strand... What's happening?
|
The lagging strand is made in pieces called Okazaki fragments.
At the start of each piece is a short segment of RNA. When it's time to join the pieces together, a type of DNA polymerase replaces the RNA w/ DNA. DNA ligase then seals the gaps b/w the pieces into a continuous strand identical to the leading strand and to the parental DNA. |
