Polymerases and Proofreading

DNA versus RNA
DNA polymerase
-recognizes mistakes (mismatches)
-removes wrong nucleotides
-replaces incorrect nucleotide w/ correct nucleotide

RNA polymerase
-cannot proofread
Leading strand grows in the direction toward the replication fork.

The Lagging strand grows in the direction away from the replication fork.
Double-stranded (ds) DNA: DNA that consists of two sugar-phosphate backbones connected through the hydrogen bonding of base pairs. The DNA of the Watson-Crick model is double-stranded.
Primase
Enzyme that allows a short string of RNA to be synthesized by base-pairing ribinucleotides with the deoxyribonucleotides of a DNA template.
