the term given to an integrated circuit. It comes from the fact that each integrated circuit comes from a single one of silicon crystal
chip
a family of integrated circuits used to perform logic funtions in digital circuits. It is noted for its low power consumption but sometimes slow speed.
CMOS (Complementary metal oxide semiconductor)
a semiconductor device used to allow current flow in one direction but not the other. As an electronic switch, it acts like a short in the forward biased condition and like an open in the revers-biased condition
diode
the most common pin layout for integrated circuits. The pins are aligned in two straight lines, on on each side
DIP (dual inline package)
a measure of the number of cycles or pulses occurring each second. Its unit is the hertz and is the reciprocal of the period
frequency
the fabrication of several semiconductor and electronic devices onto a single piece of silicon crystal. Used to perform the functions that once required several hundred discrete semiconductors.
Integrated Circuit
a 1 or 0 digital level
logic state
an electronic measuring device used in design and troubleshooting to display a waveform of voltage magnitude (y axis) versus time (x axis)
oscilloscope
a digital signal representation that uses several lines or channels to transmit binary info. These allow for the transmission of an entire multibit number with each clock pulse
parallel
the measurememnt of time from the beginning of one cycle or clock pulse to the beginning of the next. Its unit is seconds and it is the reciprocal of frequency.
period
an electric device containing an electromagnetic coil and normally open or normall closed contacts. Useful because, by supplying a small triggering current to its coil, the contacts will open or close, switching a higher current on or off
relay
a digital signal representation that uses one line or channel to transmit binary info. Binary logic states are transmitted 1 bit at a time, with the LSB first!
Serial
a newer style of integrated circuit, soldered directly to the surface of a printed circuit board
surface mount device
a diagram used to display the precise relationship between two or more digital waveforms as they vary relative to time
timing diagram
a semiconductor device that can be used as an electronic switch in digital circuitry. By aplying the appropriate voltage at the base, the collector-to-emitter junction will act like an open or shorted switch.
transistor
the most common integrated circuit used in digital electronics today. A large family of differen integrate circuits such as this is used to perform all the logic function snecessary in a complete digital system.
TTL (transistor-transistor logic)
