The Egyptian name for any kingdom or power in the south was Wawa (for lower Nubia, closest to the border at the first cataract) and Kush for Upper Nubia, further to the south. Kush: The Egyptian Kings had a completely different approach to the south: suppression and more direct rule. Difference in approach was for economic reasons. Kush was the land from which great riches were taken, such as gold, ebony, ivory, ostrich eggs, feathers, animal skins. The late 18th dynasty created the office of King’s son of Kush: one of the royal sun became viceroy in Kush, paying tribute to the pharaoh.
