Accommodation Theory
HOWARD GILES:
Bases of theory is on divergence and convergence.
Convergence
Occurs frequently; it is when we move out speech towards that of the other speaker.
Divergence
When a speaker's style moves further away from that of the other.
Downward convergence
When speakers with RP may tone down accent then in company of working class speakers.
Upward convergence
When someone with a strong regional accent having an interview with RP speaker tries to reduce regional features- moving closer to RP.
Coupland (convergence)
Studied the speech of a woman in a Cardiff travel agency. Found her speech varied depending on background of customer (mirroring their accent)
