a group of closely related sentences that develop one idea
List and define the four types of paragraphs
descriptive - appeals to the senses by relating an image or creating a mood
narrative - tells a story
expository - informs or explains
persuasive - influences the readers opinion
What does a topic sentence do?
clearly states the main idea of the paragraph (when writing about literature, this usually has the author + title) it focuses on one point, and should never be a "DUH" statement
What does the body do?
the body sentences support and/or develop the topic sentence
What does the clincher do?
the clincher is a sentence which restates the main idea, summarizes the supporting information, or explains the significance of the information. it never ends a paragraph suddenly.
List and define the methods of development:
examples - concrete instances
facts/statistics - quantifiable facts/facts that can be proved
sensory details - relates to the 5 senses
narrative details - details that tell a story
Unity
oneness - all supporting details relate to the topic sentence
