In year one I read 10 English books and 7 French books. In year two I read twice as many french books as English books. 60% of books in the first two years were French. How many books did I read in the second year?
2nd year French books = 2x; 2nd year English = x
Setup: (2x+ 7) / (17 + 3x) = 60/100 Solve for x. Remember x = English books in 2nd year. 3x = total books in 2nd year. |
Solve (2^5) / (2^3)
= 2 ^5-3 = 2^2

Four boys wash a car in 2 hours. How many minutes does it take 5 boys to wash the car?
Find the boy-minutes.
4 boys x 120 minutes = 480 boy-minutes. 480 boy-minutes required for the job, now divide by 5 boys. |

A jar of marbles has a red:blue marble ratio of 3:5. More red and blue marbles are added (the same amount of each color). What is greater: the new red/blue ratio or the old one?
The new ratio of red:blue will always be greater if an equal amount of marbles (x blue, x red) are added. Same reason that as years go by, the ratio of age difference becomes greater.
A jar of marbles - probability of choosing a red is 3/7. What is the ratio of red:non-red
3:4
Remember a probability is very different from a proportions ratio |
What is the ratio of a:c when 3a=2b and 3b=5c
Both equations have b in common, set b = 1, and then solve for a:c

In 1980 John was three times as old as Adam. In 1984, he was only two times as old as Adam. How old was Adam in 1990?
1984:
John = 3x Adam = x 1990: John = 3x + 4 Adam = x + 4 3x+4 = 2(x+4) Solve for x, which is Adam's age in 1980, then add 10 years to make 1990. |
