What is thrombocytopenia?
decreased platelet count
What is the normal platelet level?
105-450
Contraindications for thrombocytopenia:
no aspirin or products that can cause bleeding
Treatment for thrombocytopenia:
platelet transfusion
What causes Iron-Deficiency Anemia (Hypochromic)?
Blood loss, lack of dietary iron, unable to absorb iron (Celiac disease)
Signs & Symptoms of iron-deficiency Anemia
SOB, fatigue, rapid pulse, decreased concentration, unable to adjust to cold temp., pale
Treatment for Iron-Deficiency Anemia
Foods high in iron. Drink orange juice.
What causes Pernicious Anemia?
Lack of intrinsic factor. Unable to absorb vitamin B-12
Signs & Symptoms of Pernicious Anemia
unsteady gait, numbness/tingling, decreased reflexes, swollen tongue
Treatment for Pernicious Anemia
Vitamin B-12 injections, foods high in B-12 (shellfish, liver, beef, fish, cheese, eggs)
What causes Folic Acid Deficiency Anemia?
Decreased folic acid in diet, body unable to use folic acid, caused by illness
Who is folic acid anemia most commonly seen in?
alcoholics
Treatment for folic acid anemia:
foods high in folic acid: citrus fruit, green leafy vegetables, fortified cereals
What is hemolytic anemia?
Can be inherited or acquired. Causes RBCs to be deformed and can be caused by harmful substances and drugs taken for illness
What is a symptom of hemolytic anemia?
jaundice
What is the treatment for hemolytic anemia?
Remove the spleen.
What is aplastic anemia?
Rare. Bone marrow malfunction, decreased RBCs, WBCs, PLTs. Exposure to toxins can cause it.
Signs and Symptoms of aplastic anemia:
irregular heart beat, enlarged heart
Treatment for aplastic anemia:
Bone marrow transplant
What is sickle cell anemia?
Genetic defect where RBCs are crescent shaped
What does "HOP" to it mean?
Hydration, oxygen, pain
What is the treatment for sickle cell anemia?
No cure. Control symptoms/manage disease.
What is chemo-induced anemia?
Chemotherapy kills good and bad cells resulting in anemia
