50% is GAG and proteoglycans (mainly hyaluronic acid and Chondroitin sulfate)

It surrounds the cartilage and it is highly vascularized because cartilage is not.
It has lots of Type I collagen and fibroblast-like cells
Cells of cartilage and function
1. Mesenchyme precursor fibroblast-like cells: found in perichondrium, differentiates into chondroblast

2. Chondroblast: in the inner surface of perichondrium. Secretes lots of matrix. Turns into chondrocyte

3. Chondrocytes: located in lacunae. Help maintain cartilage
