|

Stamp Act
|
During greenville's term a tax was placed on all printed materials, it cost the colonists 10 times more to buy a pieve of paper than it did in 1763. This caused alot of resistance in the colonies.

Boston Tea Party
|
Towards the end of 1773 a group of disgruntled colonists desguised as Indians borded a British ship and dumped over 300 chests of tea into the harbor costing the East India Company the equivilant to 4 mil. today. This enraged the English more, and showed the rising tensions between the English and the Americans.

War between the the French allied with the Indians agains the British allied with the Iriqois in Northern America caused by the growing British colonies pushing into French territory. 1756-1763

Thomas Paine and Common Sense
|
Thomas Paine wrote a pamphlet in 1776 stating that it was common sense that America would eventually break free from England. The pamphlet sold 100,000 copies in 2 months in the colonies. It further fueled the fire towards becoming and independant nation.

Articles of Confederation
|
Americas 1st try at createing a government. Colonist feared central government and didnt want it to be like a monarchy. Instead they put in place the articles which was a state government. This turned out to be a disaster because it gave no one any real power.

Battle in Albany in 1777. General Howe abandons Burgoyne and goes to philadelphia. Burgoyne surrenders.This leads to the French-American alliance.

Shay's Rebellion

A rebellion to the first taxes to help repay debt of the revolution. Danielle shay demands taxes reliefe and raieses and army. They beat and kill tax collectors. This further impressed the need for a certralize gov't on the colonist.

The Revolution and Women
|
Women took on a new role during this period of time. They become more politically empowered. This softens the patriarical views of women of the time but then reasserts it when men feel slightly threatened. Women were not addressed in the constitution.

Most tribes didnt fight in war. The Iroqouis remained allied with the British.Cherokee allied with the Patriots.

Alexander Hamilton
|
NY lawyer that heads the movement towards a Federal gov't in the 1780s. Calls the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and convences George Washington to endorse the Federalist party.

|
Asists Hamilton in selling the idea of a centralized gov't. With TJefferson proposes the idea of the three branches of government. Later became president in 1808

The Bill of Rights
|
First ten amendments to the constitution adopted in 1789 and ratified in 1791. The Anti-Federalists insisted on these amdentments to ensure the centeral gov't have some of the issues the monarchy did.

The American Constitution
|
Document signed in Philadelphia in 1778 of policies for the new American government. Many men helped create the document including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. The document addressed issues such slaves and indians but did not address women.

|
Protest by Pennsylvania farmers against the tax on whisky in 1794.

|
Acts passed in the colonies in 1798 that limited freedoms of press and speach and the liberties of non-citizens

|
1797 French ships plundered American ships and a bribe was demanded. America refused to pay which caused sea battles for two years.

Native American leader who pushed tribes into reverting back to traditional ways and refusing the whites. Later became a British General.
