What are the cartilages of the external aspect of the nasal cavity?
Median nasal septal cartilage
Lateral nasal cartilage Lesser and greater alar cartilages Smaller vomeronasal and accessory cartilages. |
What is the medial wall (medial nasal septum) of the nasal cavity composed of?
Vomer, perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone and septal nasal cartilage.
What is the medial nasal septum covered with?
Mucoperiosteum - and epithelial covering.
What are the 3 elevations in the lateral nasal wall?
The turbinates or nasal conchae (superior, middle and inferior)
What bones comprise the lateral wall of the nasal cavity?
1. Frontal bone - anterior aspect
2. Perpendicular plate of the palatine bone - posterior aspect 3. Ethmoid bone - superior and middle conchae 4. Inferior concha 5. Maxillary bone (ant. nasal spine and nasal crest) - portion of the floor 6. Horizontal plate of the palatine bone (nasal crest) - posrtion of floor 7. Cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone, sphenoid bone, palatine bone, vomer, frontal bone and nasal bone - roof of the nasal cavity. |
Where is the sphenoethmoidal recess?
Superior and posterior to the superior meatus and posterior to the superior concha, is the point of drainage of the sphenoidal sinus - recess.
What is the mucosa of the maxillary sinus composed of?
Composed of either a pseudostratified ciliated epithelium or a simple columnar epithelium. These epithelia contain goblet cells - secrete mucous
What is the posterior border of the maxillar sinus?
It is the infratemporal surface of the maxilla. The posterior superior alveolar foramina enter into the post walls. Small channels travel inferiorly to the floor of the sinus. these channels contain the posterior superior alveolar nerves that travel to the maxillary molars.
What comprises the roof of the maxillary sinus?
Thin orbital plate of the maxilla. The infraorbital nerve runs along the superior aspect of the orbital roof of maxilla - travels within the infraorbital canal and exits through the infraorbital foramen. Small canals exit from the infraorbital canal carryign branches of the middle superior alveolar nerves and vessels that travel to the premolars.
What is the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus composed of?
It is composed of the facial surface of the maxilla. The infraorbita canal descends from the roof and exits into the face through the maxillary bone - the anterior superior alveolar nerves and vessels that supply the maxillary incisors and canines run thorugh this small canal.
What is the medial wall (base of the pyramid) of the maxillary sinus composed of?
It is composed of the maxilla and small plates of the lacrimal and palatine bones. The Hiatus semilunaris is a continuity between the maxillary sinus and nasal cavity in the area of the middle meatus of the nasal cavity.
The frontal sinus...
is found in the midline of the anterior aspect of the frontal bone and divided into 2 or more compartments - seperated by midline septum.
Drainage of the sinus travels through the frontonasal duct either into the frontal recess of the middle meatus or into the ethmoidal infundibulum |
The ethmoidal sinuses...
are a series of holes found in the midline of the sphenoid bone. It is normally asymmetrically seperated into 2 major portions via a sphenoidal septum. The sinus drains into the sphenoethmoidal recess through the sphenoidal ostium.
