What does a Blood Bank do?
The specimens can tell us which blood products can be used with which patients
What tubes are used for Blood Bank specimens?
Red, lavender or pink (No serum separator gel)

What are the 2 reasons a Doctor would ask for a blood culture?
For an explained fever or if either bacteremia or septicemia are suspected
What are the 2 types of bottles used for blood cultures and what do they mean?
Aerobic is with air and anaerobic is without air
Using a butterfly, what is the order of draw for blood cultures?
Aerobic then Anaerobic
Using a syringe, what is the order of draw for a blood culture?
Anaerobic then Aerobic
What is a very important step when doing blood cultures?
Skin antisepsis (Cleaning the area with betadine)
How wide of an area do you make when cleaning the site?
3 to 4 inches
Steps in blood specimen collection?
- Perform friction scrub (clean area)
- allow to dry
- cleanse culture bottles while drying
- do not retouch the area
What are antimicrobial neutralization products?
Bottles with an additive that negates the effects of antibiotics, so they do not interfere with the blood culture tests
In a normal order from a Doctor, how many bottles will be used for a blood culture?

What do you do for each bottle?
Number them as sets, the times and the location of each set of draws

- 8: A Basal baseline is taken
- 8: Glucola is taken
- 8:05: Glucola is finished
- 8:35: 1/2hr test is done
- 9:05: 1st hour test is done
- 10:05: 2nd hour test is done
- 11:05: 3rd hour test is done
The lactose tolerance test is different from the Glucose test, in what way?
All the timing intervals are the same, but instead of the Glucola, a drink, heavy in Lactose, is given.
What is Therapeutic drug monitoring used for?
The management of patients being treated with certain drugs.
In Therapeutic drug monitoring, what is done JUST before the drug is given?
A Trough Level, basically a baseline reading.
What is involved in Therapeutic Phlebotomy?
The removal of large quantities of blood, and not replacing them.
What is the special protocol used when dealing with forensic specimens?
The chain of custody.
When doing blood alcohol testing, what can NOT be used?
Alcohol antiseptic
What color tube is used for blood alcohol testing?
A gray top.
What is considered Point Of Care Testing?
Testing done at a patients home bedside.
What is a typical POCT test, and what is it used for?
A bleeding time test, it evalulates platelet plug formation in the capillaries.
What is used to administer a bleeding time test?
It uses a device like a finger stick, but it makes two incisions, deep enough to cause scarring.
What are proteins specific to the heart muscle?
Cardiac Troponin T (TnT) and Troponin I (TnI)
When do Troponin T levels rise?
About 4 hours after a heart attack and stay elevated for about 2 weeks
When do Troponin I levels rise?
About 3-6 hours after a heart attack and return to normal in about 5-10 days
What do Hematocrit levels measure?
The volume of RBCs in the patients blood
When are hemoglobin levels important?
When testing anemic patients
How are occult blood/guaiac tests performed?
They are done by finding and testing blood found in stool
What hormone do pregnancy tests look for?
Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG)
What is a routine skin test?
A TB test
