Most coasts can be classified in what two categories? What determines this classification?
Erosional or depositional. It depends on whether their primary features were created by erosion of land or deposition of sediments.
Erosional coasts are typified by what kinds of characteristics?
Sea cliffs and rocky shores
Depositional Coasts are typified by what kind of characteristics?
deltas, mangrove swamps, salt marshes, barrier islands, and beach-sand dunes.
What is a primary coast?
coasts that are shaped predominantly by terrestrial processes, including erosion or deposition by rivers, streams, glaciers volcanism, and tectonic movements.
What is a secondary coast?
coast that are shaped by marine erosion or deposition caused by wave action, sediment transport by currents, and marine organisms.
The Mississippi River and other similar deltas are formed by what?
river-borne sediment deposition
Rivers emptying to the Atlantic Ocean...
Rivers emptying into the Atlantic have only done so recently (in geological time). When the passive margin of the Atlantic coast sank isostatically, it reversed the direction of the rivers.
Jagged shores composed primarily of former coral reef are known as?
Ironshore
What is the principal form of coastal modification?
The breaking of waves
What are eroded faster, sedimentary rocks or volcanic rocks?
Sedimentary rocks are much softer and erode much faster.
Why do sea caves form?
As waves cut into coastal cliffs and headlands, they encounter rocks of variable resistance to erosion. Rapid erosion of the less resistant rock often leads to the formation of a sea cave.
