When did people first start to settle in souther Mesopotamia?	3500 B.C.
What was the earliest known civilization?	Sumerian.
What crops did the Sumerian's grow?	Wheat,sesame,flax,fruit trees,date palms, and other vegetables.
Why did each Sumerian city-state have a bronze gate?	To keep out lions and bandits.
What are artisians?	Skilled workers
What did the Sumerian's use to build their houses?	They mixed mud from the rivers with crushed reeds to make brick.
How would each city-state show which one was stronger?	They would go into war.
What was the temple called at the center of each sumerian city-state?	Ziggurat.
What does ziggurat mean?	Mountain of god, or hill of heaven.

What is cuneiform?	It is writing made up of houndreds of wedges.
What was a main goal for each sumerian?	To please the gods.
What wwas the main thing they tought in school?	To teach students how to write.
What did the students write with?	They wrote with sharp ended reeds.
What did the students use to write on?	They wrote on clay tablets about the size of a post card.
What did you become when you graduated from school?	A scribe or writer
What were some of the places a scribe might work?	The temple, a palace, for the government, or even the army.
Who was one of the most famouse priest?	Gilgamesh of Uruk.
Who did they believe could live forever?	The gods and goddesses.
How many people this century can read cuneiform?	Only about 250!
