What does the acronym MPC stand for? How many levels of MPC specification are there, and why are two of them now obsolete?
MPC stands for Multimedia Personal Computer. There are three levels of specification (MPC, MPC2, and MPC3), and MPC and MPC2 are now obsolete because all PCs nowadays exceed their requirements.
Explain the purpose of a graphics tablet, and why it may be used in place of a mouse when developing multimedia presentations or applications.
A graphics tablet is an input device which consists of a tablet (similar to a mouse mat) and a ‘pen’ (used in place of the mouse) which sends signals to the PC through contact with the tablet. It is used as a mouse replacement for graphics and photo-retouch activities, where the mouse does not provide accurate enough control.
There are four ways that real-world (analogue) pictures can be captured for use in multimedia projects. Name two of these methods.
•Using a scanner to transfer copies of a photograph or picture
•Using a 35mm or APS (Advanced Photo System) scanner to digitise slides, negative strips or an APS adapter
•Using a digital camera to capture images directly in a digital format
•Extracting a still image from a video clip
Describe the process that takes place when you use a scanner.
A scanner takes a real-world (analogue) picture and converts it into digital data so the computer can understand the image.
What is the best type of scanner for use when developing a multimedia presentation?
A flatbed scanner.
Instead of using a scanner, which other piece of hardware could be used which would automatically convert pictures into a format that the PC could understand?
A digital camera.
With regards to capturing digital images, what does an ADC do? What does the acronym ADC stand for?
ADC stands for Analogue Digital Converter. The analogue values of an image are passed through an ADC, which converts the picture information into digital data.
Describe two benefits of using a digital camera instead of a conventional film camera when making a multimedia presentation.
The results of a photographic session can be reviewed immediately. The photographer can leave the location, knowing that the required images have been successfully captured
•There are no time delays i.e. waiting for the film to be processed, possibly to find that not all the images are usable
•There are no ongoing costs in purchasing fresh rolls of film. The images can be downloaded into the computer and the memory can be re-used for other photographic sessions
•There are no film processing costs
•There is no wastage. Unwanted images can be deleted from the camera’s memory and the memory capacity can be re-used to store other photographs
How many pixels does a digital camera CCD (charge-coupled device) need to have to match the quality of a film camera’s output?
4 megapixels/4 million pixels.
Why is it best to have a large hard disk drive when creating multimedia projects?
A large hard disk drive is needed to store the large file sizes produced by multimedia projects.

MIDI gives better quality recordings than using a microphone. Explain why.
MIDI does not record real-world sounds (instead, sounds and music are produced electronically), and therefore MIDI recordings do not have any background noise or hissing/interference etc.
When, with regards to publishing a multimedia presentation, would you need to use a modem?
A modem would be required when the multimedia project is going to be online i.e. is a website.
Under which circumstance should you consider using an ISDN or ADSL Internet connection systems?
If the online multimedia presentation were regularly updated, a fast connection would be desirable.
