when the aircrewman falls away from the pilot parachute causeing the main canopy to be pulled from the container assembly, followed by the suspension lines.
what point does the parachutist receive the opening shock?
when the lift webs are pulled from the container while the canopy fully opens as th parachute fulls with air.
what is the design and constuction of a parchute and its components based on?

the pilot chute, the canopy, the suspension lines and the risers.
what is tensile strength?
the greatest stress cloth can withstand along its length without rupturing, espressed as the numbert of pounds per square inch.
what is tear strength?
the average force expressed in pounds required to continue a tear across either the filling or the warp of the cloth.
what is air permeability?
the measured amount in cubic feet of the flow of air through a square foot of cloth in 1 min under a specific pressure.
what is gore?
the material between any two suspension lines.
how are the four sections of each gore identified?
by the letters a, b, c, and d starting with the bottom section.
what are the two types of threads of most woven cloth?
warp and filling
what should be the marking fluid if you should have to add markings to the canopy?

what thread should be used for sewing diagonal steams?
size B or E nylon thread
what size thread should be used for all other seams, zigzag stitching and repairs?
size E
what are suspension lines?
they form a net or skeleton for the canopy and absorb much of the shock load.
how are the flaps of the parachute container held closed?
by two or four ripcord pins inserted through locking cones.
what are parachute harness fittings? (hardware)
small metal decive usually made of cadmium or chrome-plated stell and are desgned to join the parchute and harness and to afford easy and rapid adjustment of the harness to the wearer.
what are the two adapters used with a regular quick-fit type harness?
the regular harness adapter and the friction adapter.
what snap is used as a means to quickly attach the navy chest-type parachute to the two d-rings on the navy chest-type harness?
the quick-connector snap.
what are connector links?
fittings designed to join the parachute to the harness
what is seawars?
the parachute harness sensing release unit, which the aircrew systems change 446 incorporated and is designed to automatically release the parachute risers upon immersion in seawater
what may need to be done when issuing parachutes?
give some instructions to the aircrewmen on proper ways to carry and handle them.
what do you ensure when using the container to return parachutes to supply or to transfer the assembly to another activity?
the old tags and lebels on the container are removed or marked out and that the proper tags and labels are attached and properly filled out on the transferring container.
why are new parachutes inspected before being placed in service, aside from inspection for damage?
becasue it is possible for a mistake to be made when many persons are invovled in a manufacturing process.
when a parachute require changes and modifications how are they issued?
by the aircrew systems bulletins aircrew systems changes, and updated material entered in the emergency personnel and drogue parachute systems manual navair 13-1-6.2
who is assigned emergency parachutes?
operating units
when are major inspections of emergency parachutes routine?
when the parachute is first put into service, and then later at intervals to coincide with the time the aircraft is down for major maintenance.
what are the less extensive inspections that do not involve unpacking the parachute?
daily, preflight postflight and special
how often are special inspections done?
every 7 days 10 days or 14 days depending on the type of aircraft.
if any damage is found or suspected during the inspections who is the assembly sent to for thorough inspection testing and possible repair?
an aviation intermediate maintenance depot (aimd)
who is the entire parachute shipped to after an emergency use for a detailed inspection?
the naval weapons center, china lake, california
how are parachute maintenance and inspection procedures performed?
according to the guidelines set forth in the emergency personnel and drogue parachute systems manual navair 13-1-6.2 and the maintenance requirements cards navair 13-600-4-6-3
who does all parachute maintenance?
the lowest level activity equipped to satisfactorily perform the work.
what must you fill out whenever you perform any of the routine inspections?
an opnav form 4790/38
what is the parchute configuration inspection and history record (opnav 4790/101)?
it is designed to provide a continuing historical record of a parachute assembly and its components throughtout its service life
how are all original (flimsy)copies of the history record maintained?
in a permanent file as designated by the cognizant aircraft maintenance officer
who is the history record and the permanent file of original (flimsy) history records forwarded to when a parachute assembly has been involved in an aircraft accident?
the commander nacal weapons center (code 64123)china lake ca 93555
who initiates the parachute configuration inspection and history record?
each time the parachute assembly is inducted for repack or maintenance.
what type of parachute components must be entered in the configuration verfication section of the history record?
all parachute components other than cartridges and cartridge-actuated decives with assigned service life.
when may the history record be destroyed?
when a parachute (canopy) has been retired because its total service life has expired.
should a salvaged item be reused if its previous history cannot be firmly established?
no, under any circumstances.
what must be filled out whenever a canopy is inspected and found to need repairs?
an appropriate canopy damage chart
what is done with the canopy damage chart when the repairs to the canopy are done?
it is attached to the parachute configuration inspection, and history card.
what are the forms used in the naval aviation maintenance program (namp) that are applicable to parachute maintenance?
