What are cafe au lait spots?
Macules in babies which are often benign but can be a sign of neurofibromatosis
What are mongolian spots?
Blue-black macule in lumbosacral area of baby - darkest at 1yr and disappears by 3yrs

Wheal and Flare + itch

Small white pustules on face and scalp of neonate that resolve spontaneously over several months

Yellowish papules and pustules with surrounding erythema and macular flare. NOT found on palms or soles

How do you tell difference between irritant diaper dermatitis and candida diaper dermatitis? How does treatment differ?
Irritant rash will not be in creases and will not have satellite lesions whereas candida will.
Irritant rash is red dry and scaly while candida is red, scaly and has pustules.
Treat irritant with steroids and candida with anti-fungal
What are common types of scaly rashes in infants/children?
Seborrheic dermatitis, tinea corporis
What is a hemangioma?
Common red birth mark found on nape, forehead, upper eyelid, nose or upper lip that appears after birth and spontaneously disappears in a couple of years (usually)
What is erythema infectiosum?
A "slapped cheek" red rash found in children with "5th disease" which is due to parvovirus B19 infection. Slap cheek is followed by macular, red, lacy limb rash
What are symptoms of measles?
Red mauculopapular rash
High fever
Red eyes
What is roseola infantum?
Maculopapular rash that appears AFTER a fever and is due to HHV-6. Spontaneously resolves
What type of rash is found in scarlet fever?
Scaly
What are signs/symptoms of scarlet fever?
Sandpaper like rash, peeling fingertips, strawberry tongue, fever, pharyngitis
What causes scarlet fever?
Group A streptococcus
How do you treat scarlet fever?
Penicillin V
