Causes of GERD
|
Obesity, pregnancy, full stomach, lying down, bending forward, lifting heavy objects.

LES. Relaxes too frequently and lets acid in. Lower esophageal pressure also allows reflux.

What are some non-medicinal ways of treating GERD.

Decrease consumption of citrus and tomato products, spicy foods, caffeine.Eat more smaller meals. Elevate head slightly during sleeping.

|
Dysphagia, bleeding emesis, coffee ground stools, choking, weight loss.

What do promotiligy agents do in GERD.

Increase LES pressure. Promote gastric motility to get stuff moving out of the stomach quicker.

Metoclopramide
(Reglan) |
Dopamine antagonist. Enhances peripheral action of Ach at muscarinic receptor. Increases LES tone. Stimulates stomach emptying and lowers transit time. Helpful for GERD and pre-surgical. It does cross BBB and can cause sedation. Don't take during work. Ups prolactin.

Only blocks peripheral dopamine receptor. No CNS effects.
