What makes up blood plasma? (8)
90% water, ions, nutrients, hormones, enzymes, antibodies, waste, and proteins.
What are the three main plasma proteins? What are their functions?
Albumin: provides osmotic pressure to draw water into capillaries
Globulin: transports lipids and fat soluble vitamins; has a role in immunity
Fibrinogen: an important clotting factor
Where are erythrocytes produced?
The bone marrow.
What are the two types of white blood cells (leukocytes)?
Agranular: lymphocytes, monocytes
Granular: neurotrophils, eosinophils, basophils
What is the function of lymphocytes?
To fight infectious organisms and act as an antigen to produce an immune reaction.
What are the two main classes of lymphocytes? What are their functions?
T cells: attack foreign bodies directly
B cells: multiply to become plasma cells and secrete antibodies
What is the function of the antibody histamine?
It is a vasodilalator, produces inflammation, and can constrict smooth muscles in bronchi
What is the function of a neurophil?
To phagocytize bacteria.
What is the function of a eosinophil?
To turn off allergic responses and kill parasites.
What is the function of a basophil?
To release histamine and other mediators of inflammation.
