Radio Frequency Changes - 3 steps (general)
1. Give command (visual or radio)
2. Check-in Wing on new freq
3. Contact controller (include # of A/C)
Radio Frequency Changes - procedure over radio
1. Lead: "[Call Sign] switch channel 3"
2. Wing: "two"
3. Lead: "[Call Sign]"
4. Wing: "two"
5. Lead: contact controller
Radio Frequency Changes - initial contact to agency (example)
"Corpus approach, Ranger 733, flight of two with information alpha"
Radio Frequency Changes - Lead's visual procedure
1. Lead checks wing in position and area clear then tap helmet three times
2. Pass frequency to Wing: if preset, use fingers for channel number, if manual, pass manual prep signal, then manual freq 1 at a time
3. Lead looks fwd as passing signal, then glances at wing for confirmation and acknowledges w/ head nod
Radio Frequency Changes - Wing's visual procedure
1. Observe frequency change signal
2. Acknowledge signal w/ head nod (shake off if not understood)
3. Switch to new frequency
Frequency Change - Common Errors
1. Lead: Allow time for Wing to change freq
2. Lead: Provide stable platform
3. Lead: steps on people during check-in
4. Lead: misses critical calls
5. Wing: erratic parade position during freq change
Departure Phase (7 steps)
1. Ground Ops
2. Interval Takeoff
3. Running Rendezvous
4. Climb & Level Off
5. Radio Channel Changes
6. Establish Flight in Working Area
7. Conduct Fuel Check
Parade Sequence (8 steps)
1. Parade Turn Exercise (4 turns)
2. Crossunder
3. Parade Turn Exercise (4 turns)
4. Crossunder
5. Fuel Check
6. Break up and Rendezvous Exercise
7. Cruise Turns (F4004 & F4005)
8. Lead Change
Recovery Phase (6 steps)
Begins once original leader takes lead
1. Fuel Check
2. Obtain ATIS
3. Descent & Level Off
4. Radio Channel Changes
5. Homefield Entry
6. Homefield Break
Running Rendezvous - Lead
1. Depart via Course Rules
2. Above 300' AGL, retard power
3. Maintain 120 KIAS and less than 20deg AOB
4. As wing approaches, use no more than 850 ft-lbs, 150 KIAS
5. Make slow & smooth power adjustments
Running Rendezvous - Wing
1. Join up using radius of turn / airspeed differential
2. Within 3 plane lengths, use no more than 10 kts per T-34 length and maneuver to starboard 20' stepdown position and stabilize
3. Maneuver to starboard parade position with small power and back stick pressure
Underrun criteria during Running Rendezvous
Failure to recognize rapid closure rate and unable to stop beneath parade position - execute underrun procedure
Common errors during Running Rendezvous
Lead: airspeed vary, losing course rules, erratic/abrupt
Wing: trim, exceed 170 KIAS, misjudges relative motion - stagnate, underrun, excessive separation during underrun
Use of Parade Position
Congested areas, traffic patterns, IMC, demo
Good: minimum airspace, good visual comm
Bad: maneuverability, fatiguing, lookout
