germinal period
the first 2 weeks of prenatal development after conception, characterized by rapid cell division and the beginning of cell differentiation

a situation in which a certain teratogen is relatively harmless in small doses but becomes harmful once exposure reaches a certain level (threshold)
fetal alcohol syndrome
a cluster of birth defects, including abnormal facial characteristics, slow physical growth, and retarded mental development, that may occur in the child of a woman who drinks alcohol while pregnant
low birthweight
a body weight @ birth of less than 5 1/2 lbs. (2500 grams)
very low birthweight
a body weight @ birth of less than 3 lbs, 5 ounces (1500 grams)
preterm
a birth that occurs 3 0r more weeks before the full 38 weeks of the typical pregnancy- that is at 35 of fewer weeks after conception
small for gestational age
a baby whose birthweight is significantly lower that expected, given the time since conception. IE: a 5 lb newborn is considered SGA if born on time but not SGA if born 2 mos early
cerebral palsy
a disorder that results from damage to the brain's motor centers. People with cerebral palsy have difficulty with muscle control, so their speech and/or body movements are impaired
anoxia
a lack of oxygen that, if prolonged, can cause brain damage

A test often administered to newborns that measures responsiveness and records 46 behaviors, including 20 reflexes

an unlearned, involunatary action of movement that responds toa stimulus. A reflex occurs without conscious thought
