Classical conditioning basically involves what and what?
A stimulus and a response (originally learned by another stimulus).
Pavlov was involved with terming what type of conditioning?
Classical conditioning.
Pavlov's "Psychic Reflexes" in the study of saliva in dogs came to be called the what?
Conditioned reflex.
Operant conditioning is the form of learning involving...?
Responses to consequences.
Operant Conditioning was termed by...?
B.F. Skinner.
Escape learning is when an organism acquires a response that what?
Decreases or ends some aversive stimulation.
Avoidance learning is when an organism acquires a response that what?
Prevents some aversive stimulation from happening.
Negative reinforcement and punishment are different in that?
Negative reinforcement = removal of aversive stimulus, strengthening the response.
Punishment = presentation of aversive stimulus therefore weakening response.
Tolman's rat studies produced the term latent learning which means what?
Learning that is not apparent from behavior when it first occurs. And these studies on latent learning also suggest cognitive processes contributing to conditioning.
The findings of preparedness and taste aversion in phobias have lead to the recognition of what?
Species-specific biological constraints on conditioning.
After repeatedly pairing a tone with meat powder, Pavlov found that a dog will salivate when the tone is presented. Salivation to the tone is what type of a response?
Conditioned response.
Waston and Rayner conditioned Little Alber to fear white rats by banging a hammer on a steel bar as the child played with a white rat. Later, Albert feared not only white rats but white stuffed toys and Santa's beard. Albert's fear of these other objects can be attributed to what?
Stimulus generalization.
The phenomenon of higher-order conditioning shows what?
That an already established conditioned stimulus can be used in the place of a natural unconditioned stimulus.
With memory, retrieval involves recovering what?
Information from memory stores.
In dealing with verbal information, people engage in what three progressively deeper levels of processing?
Structural (shallow, emphasizes physical structure of stimulus), phonemic (emphasizes sound), and semantic encoding (meaning of verbal input).
An example of elaboration would be?
In reading about phobias and that they are often caused by classical conditioning, you apply this idea to your own fear of spiders. (Linking a stimulus to other info at the time of encoding).
Dual-encoding theory holds that memory is enhanced by forming what two codes?
Semantic and visual codes.
What is a conceptual hierarchy?
A multilevel classification system based on common properties among items.
A semantic network consists of concepts joined together by pathways that link related concepts.
An example of this would be thinking about butter and relating it to bread.
Source monitoring involves what?
Making attributions about the origins of memories
Retroactive interference is what?
New information impairs retention of previously learned information.
Proactive interference is what?
Previously learned information interferes with retention of new information.
Retrograde amnesia involves what?
The loss of memories for events that occurred prior to the onset of amnesia.
Anterograde amnesia involves what?
The loss of memories for events that occur after the onset of amnesia.
What three things is language?
Symbolic, generative (symbols generate messages), structured.
Baddeley proposed a model that consists of four components - phonological rehearsal loop, executive control system, visuospatial sketchpad, episodic buffer. What is the name of this model?
"Working memory."
Spontaneous remission?
A combination of placebo effects and the mere passage of time.
P.T. Barnum effect?
Vast majority of individuals will endorse generalized personality summaries as true/accurate and specific descriptions of themselves.
Third variable problem/Spurious correlation?
Correlations that arise not because a causal link exists between the two variables, but because both variables are related to a third variable.
Selection bias?
Refers to the relationships between certain subject and environmental variables that may arise when people with different biological, behavioral, and psychological characteristics select different types of environments.
Illusory correlation?
Tendency to explain chance events. People tend to see their expected correlation even in random events.
Watson and Rayner, who helped launch the psychological school of thought behaviorism and had a very convincing study that emotional behavior could be conditioned through simple stimulus-response techniques, had research methodology of what?
Experiment on Little Albert.
First neutral stimuli, then unconditioned stimulus of loud noise, then conditioned response of fear.
What was the deal with Skinner and the superstitious pigeon?
Birds tended to have observably different behaviors as if there was a causal relation between the behavior and food presented, although such relation was not present. Superstitious behaviors.
Tolman did experiments with what and about what?
Experiments included rats and mazes.
Point was to study complex internal cognitive activity, mental representation, cognitive maps, strip-maps.
Even serious diseases have periods of remission, like they've suddenly disappeared. What term does this example relate to?
Spontaneous remission.
Behaviorism, Little Albert, Conditioned Fear Response, Stimulus-Response Techniques all relate to which two psychologists?
Watson and Rayner.
Consequences & learning, non-contingent reinforcement, Pigeons all relate to which psychologist?
B.F. Skinner.
Latent learning with rat mazes, spatial orientation with rat mazes, strip-maps, conceptual maps, complex internal cognitive activity relates to which psychologist?
Tolmen.
Reconstructive memory relates to which psychologist?
Loftus.
External locus of control, internal locus of control, I-E Test, correlation between test results and people's behaviors towards situations in real life connects to which psychologist?
Rotter.
Why do placebo and spontaneous remission illustrate that testimonials are of little value?
There are testimonials to support virtually every therapy and any specific remedy tried.
Danger of pseudoscience?
Prevalence more widely spread than is understood. Theory of autism connected to early vaccination in children. Astrology and leading horoscope magazines have a larger following than legitimate science magazines.
What's the deal with "The Amazing Randi?"
Wants to expose that it is so easy to make up testimonial evidence for any event with claim.
Vividness with vividness.
Flying saucer example.
How did Goldberger scientifically solve the dilemma of understanding cause of pellagra?
Had evidence from manipulating variable.
Injected himself with bodily fluids of victims of pellagra and nothing happened.
Also, tested high and low diets in two groups of prisoners and low dietary group came down with disease and other did not.
Hypothesis accepted because he had empirical evidence.
Private school education superior to public school education...
Academic achievement is linked to private school attendance because of family background and general cognitive level of students in private are different from public.
Causal relationship between SES and likelihood that student will attend university...
Ruling out academic aptitude, found that correlation between university attendance and SES remained significant.
What is the importance of base rate?
Base rate, which is the prior probability, is that it needs to be combined with probable diagnostics of the case evidence in order to be a correct decision.
Hospital example of failure to use sample size.
Hospital example had that certain days more than 60% of babies were born boys (larger, smaller, or same amount hospitals) and asking which had more. Larger hospital will tend to have proportion of births closer to 50%; whereas, smaller will have larger discrepancy from value. People have difficult time with sample sizes.
Actuarial vs. Clinical prediction.
Actuarial prediction (prediction in terms of group statistical trends) is superior to clinical prediction in accounting for human behavior. Statistical prediction also correctly signals that there will always be errors/uncertainties when one is predicting human behavior. (Part of behavioral outcomes is determined by chance factors).
Deductive reasoning =
when premises of an argument are true, conclusion is true (process of reasoning from one or more general statements regarding what is known to reach logically certain conclusion).
Inductive reasoning =
When premises of an argument are true, conclusion is probabilistic (process of reasoning from specific facts or observations to reach a likely conclusion that may explain the facts).
Dialectical Reasoning =
Evaluating opposing points of view to resolve differences.
