What is the most common type of pump used in the fire service?
Centrifical Pumps
What are the 2 diiferent settings on the transfer valve?
Volume/Parallel

Pressure/Series
For pumps that have packing, what is the normal drip rate during operation?
8 - 10 drops per minute
What is the maximum pump pressure you should have when changing the transfer valve?
50 psi
What does a solid amber light on the TPM indicate?
The internal relief valve is operating.
What does a flashing amber light on the TPM indicate?
The external relief valve is operating.
What is the main purpose of the relief valve?
To protect personnel, and equipment from pressure surges.
What pressure does TD generally set the TPM at to begin with?
200 psi
When should the Volume/Parallel position be used on a two stage pump?
When the pump is used at more than 50% of its rated capacity.
When is a priming pump used, and why is it needed?
When drafting from a static water source. It is needed because it can displace air.
Why is a two stage pump normally set to pressure?
Becasue it reduces the load and RPM of the engine to produce the required pressure.
What type of oil is used by primers that are not of the ESP (Environmentally Safe Primer) variety?
Automatic transmission Fluid
What are the two main gauges on the pump panel that are also found on the dashboard?
Engine water temperature

Engine oil pressure
What is cavitation?
A potentially damaging conditon caused by air in the pump.
What is teh major concern for a pump that is engaged, but not flowing water?
Overheating due to no circulation.
What can be done to keep the pump cool while no water is flowing?
Opening the auxilliary booster cooler, and/or operning up the tank fill valve.
How do we avoid water hammer?
By opening and closing gates and valves slowly.
What are 3 things that influence discharge pressure?
Volume
RPM
Inlet pressure
What are 2 types of auxilliary coolers?
Auxilliary engine cooler, and booster/fire pump cooler
What determines the number of 2 1/2" outlets?
The rated capacity of the pump . There should be 1 outlet for every 250 GPM.
By what method are our centrifical pumps driven?
Mid-ship transfer drive
True/Flase

The PTO on water tender 4 is disabled.
True
Standpipes need to deliver ____gpm to furthest/highest most outlet for ___ minutes
Standpipes need to deliver 500gpm to furthest/highest most outlet for 30 minutes
GPM formula for sprinkler heads flowing
.5p + 15 x number of heads = GPM

(p = pressure of 150psi)
what pressure are high pressure hydrants rated at?
200psi
95 psi residual pressure
