On approach to a confirmed gas leak with no fire or explosion, what are the initial steps to be taken
-Utilize the 10 Haz Mat steps, inclusive of evacuating if prudent, establish an exclusion/hot zone keeping all personnel away from the area
On approach to a confirmed gas leak with no fire or explosion, how far away do you park your apparatus
-Park a minimum of 100 feet away, up wind depending on hydrant location
-Instruct all other arriving resources to stage at least 100 feet up wind and wait for an assignment
If a gas leak is CONFIRMED, what action must take place
Upgrade response to a full structure response if it hasn't already occurred
On a confirmed gas leak, what will the approaching crew do
The investigating FF and CA will be in full PPE including SCBA, on air, and a CO2 extinguisher in hand. Use a gas monitor to check the atomesphere, if no gas monitor on hand, do not enter the structure until you have one available
What is to occur if any amount of gas is detected by odor
-Upgrade response if it has not yet occurred, incident should then be declared a Haz Mat incident, all utilities to the building will be shut off as long as they are located on the exterior of the structure (gas and electrical)
-Do not enter the strucutre to shut off gas or electrical
If you can detect a gas odor you must until you get approval from ___ or ___ before entering a structure
HIT or IC
On a confirmed gas leak, and a rescue is needed, how do we perform
-Full PPE
-Utilize a charged attack line
-Consider requesting a full 1st or 2nd alarm if occupants are still trapped and need to be rescued
-As soon as reasonable establish 2 out with an equal sized hose line
What do you do with the electrical panel box on a confirmed gas leak
Purge with a CO2 estinguisher to prevent explosion
If there is any flammable gas readings detected near an electrical panel, what do we do
We DO NOT shut it off
Any readings in the gas monitor of ____ or more of the LEL indicates an explosive environment
-10 PPM or greater
-Do not enter this atmosphere until measures to lower the LEL have been mitigated by the HIT
Upon confirmation of an IDLH atmosphere, what can you do to the building prior to the arrival of HIT and PG&E
Open doors and windows only if it is safe to do so
If PG and E is called upon to excavate what can we do to assist
Provide stand by protection with a charged hose line and a minimum of 2 firefighters in full PPE and SCBA
If an explosion has occurred what are some of the more important actions that we can take
-Evacuate all civilians within 250 feet of blast site
-Keep the number of FD personnel to a minimum number necessary to stabilize the situation with intial staging of 100 feet upwind and upgrade
-Let HIT figure out when its safe, where the source is etc
Gas investigations in a nutshell
-One unit code 3 on an initial gas investigation
-Upon confirmation, call will be upgraded to a structure response and HIT will be requested to respond code 3
-PG and E will be requested
-IC shall declare the incident as a HAZMAT incident
Personnel safety concerning a gas investigation
-All personnel working in the exclusion/hot zone, inclusive of shutting off a gas line, will wear full PPE with SCBA, on air
-They will be protected by a back up crew staffed with a charged hose line and the same level of PPE
