What was expressionism?
Early 20th century with aim to express feelings as intensely as possible.

Intstrumentation?
Requires a large orchestra, intrumentation changes rapidly throughout with contrasts in timbre. Performers often play at extremes of their range. Unusual effects like cello bow on cymbals.
Melody?
Short, fragmented motifs. Disjunct and angular, use of octave displacement, inversion and rhythmic augmentation.
Rhythm?
Change between 3/4 2/4 4/4 Tempo is sehr rasch (very quick), complex and varied rhythms changing quickly. Layers.
Tonality?
Atonal
Harmony?
Dissonant, chords and melodies build from hexachords.
Texture?
Largely contrapuntal, complex textures with imitation and inversion, use 3 canons at same time in final climax. Frequent, sudden changes in dynamics.
Structure
Free Rondo, five sections (ABACA). Called free rondo because so different to traditional rondo of classical period where defferent sections could be heard.
