DIVORCE
Trends in divorce
Couples whose marriages are at greater risk include:
Young Marriages
Have children before they marry
Husbands married to women who are housewives are more likely to ask for a divorce on the grounds of adultery than husbands married to working women
Remarriages are more likely to end in divorce than first marriages
Differences in ethnicity, class and religion between the couple are associated with higher divorce rates
In general the lower the class the more likely they are to divorce
SEPARATION
Couples agree to live apart because of the breakdown of marriage in the past when divorce was difficult to obtain or too expensive, this was often the only solution.
They remain legally married.
EMPTY SHELL MARRIAGES
Those in which the husband and wife stay together in name only.
Today such marriages are likely to end in separation or divorce.
DESERTION
One partner leaves the other but they remain legally married.
NUCLEAR FAMILY
Includes adults of both sexes.
They maintain a socially approved sexual relationship, and one or more children.
Statistically the norm or 'ideal'.
FAMILY
A domestic group made up of people related to one another by bonds of blood, sexual mating or legal ties.
EXTENDED FAMILIES
Is a family that extends beyond the nuclear family including other relatives.
Relatives based on blood or legal ties.
SOCIALISATION
The way individuals learn and perform behavious expected of them by society.
HOMOSEXUALITY
The same sex cohabiting and becoming civil partners.
Same genders having a sexual relationship.
RECONSTITUTED FAMILY
A reconstituted family is formed when one or both people in a couple, with children from previous relationships remarry or cohabit.
HOUSEHOLD
A group of people sharing a home.
They share income.
A group of unrelated people.
LONE PARENTING
A lone parent is a term used mostly to suggest that one parent has more of the day to day responsibilities of raising the child/children.
DIVORCE
Refers to a legal agreement between two people that only can be legally terminated through divorce.
