Premack Principle
Given any pair of operant behaviors, the more frequent (preferred) one will reinforce the less frequent (less preferred) one. "Grandma's Law".
Continuous Reinforcement (CRF)
An FR schedule of reinforcement in which a behavior is reinforced each time it occurs.
Differential Reinforcement
Reinforcement of one behavior rather than another; used in discrimination training and in behavior reduction procedures.
DRH
Reinforcement of progressively higher rates/intensity of a given behavior.
DRA
Reinforcement of a behavior that is a preferred functionally alternative to an unwanted behavior.
Non-Discrimininative Stimulus (S Delta)
That stimulus or occasion that does not occasion a given behavior; stimuli not reliably present when a given behavior is reinforced.
Maintenance
Performing a response after systematic behavior change procedures have been withdrawn.
Establishing/Motivating Operation
Environmental event, operation, or stimulus condition that momentarily (a) alters the reinforcing effectiveness of other events and (b) the frequency of occurrence of the type of behavior that had been consequated by those other events.
Discriminative Stimulus
Antecedent that serves as a cue to occasion a response that results in reinforcement.
Shaping
Teaching new behaviors through differential reinforcement of successive approximations to a specified behavior.
Chaining
Instructional procedure that reinforces individual responses in a sequence, forming a complex behavior.
Topography
The physical features of a response.
Responsive Class
Set of responses that are topographically similar or serve the same function.
Functional Relationship
Exists if the dependent variable systematically changes in the desired direction as a result of the application of the independent variable.
