|
No. They are constantly breaking up and getting back together. It lasts only a fracture of a second.

What is happening in the middle of a glass of water?
|
Any given molecule is being pulled equally in all directions, so there is no net effect. But at the surface there is no force to pull water molecules up. They are pulled more to the side and down, which is what creates waters sticky skin, or surface tension. Water beading and occasionally filling a glass slightly above its brim are examples.

How do some detergents work?
|
They work by lowering surface tension, which allows water to more effectively soak into pores and dirt.
