Know the structure and physiology of Listeria spp.
• Know the sources that are implicated in Listeria infections. How can these risks be
eliminated or minimized.
• What are the major virulence factors of Listeria monocytogenes?
• Know how Listeria species are able to survive phagocytosis.
• Recognize that Listeria able to grow at low temperatures.
• Know the main clinical diseases associated with Listeria spp.
• What laboratory tests can be performed to confirm the diagnosis of Listeria infection?
objectives.
what's the morphology of listeria? interesting growing conditions?
Non spore forming gram positive rod (like corynebacterium dyptheriea).

it can grow at VERY COLD TEMPREATURES (imagine freezing cold listerine) - this is 'cold purification' and ensure that only it is growing.
what are the conditions that can be caused by listeria?
need to worry about meningitis...especially in neonates, the elderly, and immunocompromised people.

preggers women can get bacteremia/sepsis
what is its major virulence factor? what does this allow it to do?
listerolysin O. This enables it to evade macrophage phagosomes, so it can survive in macs.

note that this makes it a facultative intracellular organism - it can live in WBC's or not.
why babies and elderly and aids patients get meningitis from it, but not other people?
need strong cell mediated immunity to get this bug - and babies don't get it for awhile. old people loose it, and pregmant women in third trimester have a drop in their cell mediated immunity.

note that if you get it while pregnant, there's a high chance of loosing the baby.
where does listeria come from?
food borne pathogen, on cheese and cold cuts (pregnant women told not to eat these things toward the end).

all these can cause listeriosis - an often fatal meningitis and body infection.
