Voice Gateway: interface to the PSTN
Call Manager: SIP proxy or H.323 GateKeeper IVR Server: greeting, announcement, information collection, queuing Contact Manager: Agent information, Agent state/control, routing algorithm to agents (ACD), queue control, IVR control, etc. NAS: network attached storage (database) |
What are advantages of IP based call center
Ease of Automatic Call Distribution (ACD), and does not rely on SS7 (TCAP) for call distribution
Enterprise can easily control and manage the call routing Even a small business can operate a call center and give an impression to the customer as a large enterprise operation. New and enhanced features distribution and access to the customer data integrated telephony services ease to implement call back (click to call) Mobility, Ease of Acces of Data and Ease of creating new services |

New Challenges for VoIP
Location based Call Routing
N11 (ex. E911) 1-800 calls Security – is there a need? Is there an issue of e-mail security? CALEA - wiretapping |
Location Issues for VoIP
N11 Services.
N11 numbers are “attached” to a particular telephone circuit. The routing of N11 is based on caller’s number rather than dialed number. The VoIP provider is not able to use the regular “look-up” tables that are used to send the call to the nearest/proper terminating point. Similar issues for toll-free number, where calls are routed based on the callers location. The national Poison Control Center number is 800-222-1222, and the call is routed to the nearest Poison Control Center. |
FCC Ruling on VoIP
On May 19, 2005, the FCC took steps to protect consumers by requiring that VoIP service providers to offer enhanced 911 (E911) emergency calling capabilities to their customers.
Requirements apply to service providers offering connection to PSTN. Specifically, the order requires: Interconnected VoIP providers must deliver all 911 calls to the customer’s local Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) Interconnected VoIP providers must provide emergency operators with call back and location information of their customers (i.e., E911) The VoIP provider must provide the customer a means of updating the location information, regardless of their location Thus far, there has been no FCC action on other N11 or 1-800 services |
Three phases of E911 migration to VoIP
Phase 1 - CLEC VoIP Service Provider routes call through LEC
Phase 2 - Will be routed from CLEC VoIP Service provider directly to Tandem switch via dedicated TDM trunks Phase 3: No PSTN. User dials 911 which is translated into SIP address like SOS@domain, using DHCP the domain will be found. The SIP message includes the (geo and civel) location information. The call back data is in the Contact filed of SIP message The SIP message will be translate into PSAP |
