Popular Sovereignty
|
A government that gets its power from the people (keeps the central government from taking too much power)

Republicanism
|
The people exercise their power by voting for their political representatives

Federalism
|
A system of government in which power is shared between the states and the nation or central government and the states

Separation of Powers
|
This principle means that the government is divided into 3 basic branches. No branch is given all the power. The 3 branches are the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch and the Judicial Branch.

Checks and Balances
|
Each branch of government can exercise checks, or controls over the other branches. The branches are separate but they rely on one another to perform the work of the government

Limited Government
|
"Rule of law" means that no one is above the law. All citizens and elected leaders must obey the law. No one can twist or bypass the law to serve their own interests

Individual Rights
|
The Bill of Rights, which is the first 10 amendments of the Constitution, protects the people from a too powerful government. The Bill of Rights guarantees certain individual rights and freedoms
