What are bleaches?
a household product that contains 3-6% sodium hypochlorite

swimming pool products may contain up to 50% hypochlorite
What is the mechanism of action for bleaches?
when combined with acid or ammonia solutions, chlorine bleaches causes release of chlorine or chloramine gas and hypochlorous acid

causes respiratory and eye irritation
highly corrosive to mucous membranes
What are the clinical signs of bleach toxicosis?
signs of oropharyngeal, GI and respiratory irritation
What is the treatment for bleaches?
milk and water
magnesium oxide to neutralize stomach acids
symptomatic and supportive treatment
What should you not do when animal has been in contact with bleach?
induce vomiting (corrosive to esophagus)
gastric lavage can also be corrosive)
