What is meant by the term 'family'?
Anthony Giddens defined family as:
" A group of persons directly linked by kin connections, the adult members of which assume responsibility for caring for children".
Three reasons to study child labour in the North, in the 1800's
1. Rapid changing of societal discourses towards children and child labour.

2. Ideas of the North are imported to the South, including ideas on child rearing.

3. The south are currently undergoing similar economic changes.
Why is language so important?
It is a psychological tool which allows children to explore knowledge and relationships.

It is a cultural tool (Vygotski) which plays an important role in cultural settings and culture valued skills

* Laissez-faire - Parents tend not to get involved

* Clay moulding - Parents shape and train their children.

* Conflict - Parents teach through discipline (Baumrind?)

* Mutuality - parenting by sensitivity and mutuality.
Peer socialization.
Involves child to child collaboration.

Children learn friendship and mutual co-operation from each other
