Why, according to this paper, is a longer lifespan not selected for in evolution?
|
there would be little evolu- tionary pressure to extend the number of years of life after reproduction is finished

Why does engineering a mouse to express UCP-2 in a particular brain region lead to decreased body temperature?
|
They produced transgenic mice in which expression of the UCP-2 gene is placed under the control of the promoter for hypocretins (also called orexins). By placing UCP-2 expression under the control of this promoter, the investigators effectively placed a small heater into the hypothalamus. As their data show, this caused heating of the preoptic area, a region in which previous work had shown that insertion of heat probes would cause a reduction in body temperature.

Which of the following occur when mice are engineered to express UCP-2 in the hypothalamus?
a. The mice eat less b. The mice eat more c. The mice gain weight d. The body temp of the mice decreases e. The body temp of the mice increases f. Activity of the mice increases g. The mice live longer h. The mice burn fewer calories |
c. The mice gain weight
d. The body temp of the mice decreases g. The mice live longer h. The mice burn fewer calories (there was no change in food intake or in physical activity) |
