Which distillates are lighter and which are heavier?
The pot still distillates (holandas) are fuller bodied. The column still distillates (aguardientes) are lighter.
What is the law about percentage of aguardientes in the final product?
The final blend must contain a minimum of 50% of lower strength spirit - either holandas or aguardientes as long as they are <86%.
What generalizations can be made about the composition of solera brandy?
Entry level soleras will generally be 100% aguardiente. Solera Gran Reservas will generally be 100% holandas.
How is the aging system for Brandy de Jerez different from, say, Cognac?
Cognac uses static aging. Brandy de Jerez employs the solera system just as is used in sherry production.

Technically European or American oak, but American oak is listed as preferred by the Consejo Regulador. Each butt (50-600 liters) must have held sherry for at least 3 years prior to being used for Brandy de Jerez.
