What are the vertial column sof the periodic table known as?
Groups
Which group does Hydrogen fall into?
Group 1
What is Group 1 also known as?
ALKALI METALS
Name three alkali metals from Group 1?
Lithium and Sodium Potassium
Where can the Alkali Metal group be found on the periodic table?
On the far left hand side.
Which of these metals would most vigourously react with Water, sodium; potassium or lithium?
Potassium
Name the gas produced whenan alkali metal reacts with water?
Hydrogen
What colour is seen when a flame test is carried out on a sodium compound?
Orange
What coulour flame is seen when a flame test is carried out on a potassium compound?
Lilac
what colour flame is seen when a flame test is carried out on a lithium compound?
red
what happens when sodium is burnt in chlorine gas?
The compound sodium chloide is produced.
Group 1 metals form yellow compounds that dissolve to form a colourless solution.
TRUE OR FALSE
FALSE
Group 1 metals form white compounds that dissolve to form a yellow solution.
TRUE OR FALSE
FALSE
Group 1 metals form white compounds that dissolve to form colourless solutions.
TRUE OR FLASE
TRUE!!!!!
All the alkali metals are VERY reactive. why?
they have one electron in their outer shell that is able to form covelent or ionic bonds easily.
Name three properties that all Alkali Metals have?
they are very reactive.
they all create white compounds
they all have one electron in the outer shell.
they
Is an alkali metal atom oxidised or reduced during a reaction?
It is oxidised.
why would an alkali metal seem dull in appearance?
It is very reactive so it has reacted to the water vapour (moisture) i the air and has developed an oxide layer on its surface.
Why do alkali metals float in water?
They have a lower density than water.
Why would you observe the floating alkali metal moving ontop of the water
The metal is reacting with the water to produce a metal hyroxide and hydrogen. This release of gas causes an effervesscence.
