Is a black and white photo on black paper or what paper?
White paper with black ink.
What is a duotone picture?
Two colors of ink used to make a picture; black and one other color.
Emboss
Details are raised on the cover
Deboss
Details are pushed down into the cover.
Graining
A texture is pressed into the cover of the book.
Hot Foil
A metallic foil is pressed onto a cover or page. Can be colors like iridescent or oil foil.
Silk Screen
Ink used to put details onto linen and leather covers.
Metalgloss Seal
A thin metal seal that is applied or pressed unto a yearbook
Die Cut
using a die to cut out parts of a cover or endsheet, etc.
Boards
Heavy weight carboard that makes up the front and back covers.
What are boards measured in?
Pounds; the higher the number the heavier the board.
Spine
Edge of the book that connects front and back covers.
What does the spine contain?
Name of book, name of school, location of school, year, volume number, and sometimes the theme.
Headband
Fabric binding strip that can be seen at the top and bottom of the spine on some books; helps hold the book together.
Endsheets
Heavy paper pages that connect the front and back covers to the first and last pages; help hold the book together.
What can the endsheet sometimes double as?
The table of contents.
What can you do to endsheets?
Emboss, deboss, hot foil, silkscreened, etc.
What page is the Title Page on?
Page 1
What is included on the Title Page?
Name of book, name and address of the school, year, volume number, and theme. May also include phone number or enrollment number.
What page is the opener on?
2-3+
What is the point of the opener?
Introduce theme and set the tone.
Dividers
Divide one section from another section; introduce each section and restate the book's theme verbally and visually.
Sections
Chapters of the yearbook
What page is the Closer on?
Last
What does the closer do?
Sums up the year and wraps up the book's theme.
Colophon
A list of the book's specifications, like colors, fonts, company. Also may include a thanks or special credits.
Spread
Two facing pages of the book; cover one topic and unified by some elements crossing the gutter.
Gutter
Crease in the middle of the spread where the pages join the spine.
Tip in
A set of pages that is not sewn into the book but inserted with a sticky strip.
How are spring supplements inserted?
They are tip-ins.
Template
A spread created to be the basis of other spreads in the book. Usually there is more than one for each section. The templates set seizes and styles for all the elements on a page.
Signature
16 consecutive pages of a yearbook printed on one big sheet of paper that is folded and cut to each become its own little booklet and then sewn together to make the whole book.
Flat
One side of the signature that is run thorough the press separately; one may be black and white and the other could be color.
Ladder
A chart showing which pages form signatures and white pages are flats.
Grid
A system of mini-columns that can be as narrow as 2-3 picas that allow flexibility in design.
Plus Column
Using odd numbers of small columns so one will be left over for decks, mugshots, rails of white space, or facts, etc.
What does the size of a yearbook refer to?
Cover dimensions.
