Bryce constantly uses his charismatic mask which blinds Hannah of his true intentions. Hannah first encounters Bryce at a school party over the summer, and his charisma and outgoing conversations are enough to woo any teenaged girl. Her friends warned her of his intentions, however she brushed aside the facts and decided to judge based on his first impression. Bryce was so compelling that Hannah couldn’t possibly say no to his simple requests. Later on in the novel, at Hannah’s favorite corner gas station, Bryce offers to buy her a chocolate bar, only having to disrespectfully grab her while waiting in line, permitting himself with the excuse of “being curious” and that “it was merely a joke”. After making the first move, Hannah tries to escape, but Bryce grabs her and holds her down forcefully. He ignores her cries of mercy, and violates Hannah in the most painful, shameful way, not only hurting Hannah physically, but also ripping the pureness and sanity from her fingers. Bryce originally raped Hannah’s best friend Jessica at a summer bash, while Hannah had trapped herself in the nearby closet, forced to listen. Bryce was able to rape Jessica because she was weak from drinking, and wasn’t able to move. Unfortunately, this had scarred Hannah even more, for she couldn’t stick up for her best friend and forced herself to remain silent, to only listen to her screams. Hannah become aware of his true intentions, however, she was not able to escape his wrath, and became the victim herself towards the end of the novel.
