Women’s groups such as the Women’s Christian Temperance Union wanted to ban alcohol. They beloved that grain should not be used for alcohol instead it should be helping the soldiers feed. Furthermore, crime would be lowered, more production would happen and drinking alcohol was not considered religious. The farmers, churches, lodges, and merchant associations also agreed. The federal government made a decision in 1918 to start Prohibition. Alcohol was smuggled and sold legally, making large amounts of money. Dropping prohibition was easier than enforcing it. Soon provinces started to drop prohibtion and by 1927 prohibition were no more and instead taxes were put on alcohol. …show more content…

The Great Depression was the worst economic problem faced. The depression was caused by certain things. Many people blamed Stock Market Crash, but it is actually a “symptom”. When rescission occurred, businesses were slow. If the business cycle continued rescission can become very serious and widespread that turns into depression. Some things that led to depression are Canada being too dependent on the United States, Canada’s dependence on the very little primary products, over production, over expansion, and to much credit buying.

1927, the majority of Canadian women over the age of 21 were allowed to vote and take part in provincial and federal elections. However women were not eligible to be appointed in the Senate due to Constitution Act of 1867 stating that women are not considered as "persons". August 1927, The Famous Five that were a group of women including Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Lousie McKinney, Henrietta Edwards, and Irene Parlby wanted Women to be defined as “Persons”. They went to the Supreme Court of Canada and asked if the word “Persons” section 24 of British North America Act include female and they declined. They decided to go to the Privy Council in Britain declared that the word ‘Persons’ refers both to Women and Men. Women could now appoint for higher jobs and greater rights.
