The events during the Great Depression were very unbelieveable. Some of these events are related to the novel 1984. The characters reflect some of the major events in this tragic event in history and come to show its resemblance to the aspects of life in both.

The Great Depression in America was a hard road to recovery and is in great relation to
1984. One of Orwell’s influences for this book came from the Great Depression. Many troubles during this time period are reflected in his writing. One way this all relates to 1984 is the way there was a little ration of food given and low income. When Winston gets caught for his crime done and is brought to the cell where there is no darkness which he doesn’t know if he’s been there for days, weeks, or months, is given nothing to eat. All he see’s is starvation and beating. It soon causes him to have the thought that he wishes that someone from the brotherhood could send him a razor blade probably because he wanted to kill himself. His body later becomes corpselike and very gaunt looking when O’Brien forces himself to take off his clothes and look at who he has become in the mirror. This is a much like devastating and upsetting situation in which similarly people in the Great Depression had to
