According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, this field is expected to grow 17% from 2012 to 2022, which is faster than the average rate of growth (“Fundraisers: Occupational Outlook”). The outlook for fundraising as a career is optimistic because organizations will always need people to help raise money. Not only, is the career field expanding, the average annual salary is also quite substantial. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates it to be around $56,270 a year (“Fundraisers”). In order to increase this annual salary and get promoted, the only thing a director of development can do is to work longer. Experience is what drives advancement in this career (Career Cruising). The director of development has a vast variety of responsibilities from developing a website design to securing donations from individuals directly or at a fundraising event. It is not an easy career but fundraising is an important one. The hours are long and the work is often open-ended but the outcome is most often helping people.
