He had never been touched by the opposite sex or by anyone for that matter. He just wanted to be held and to be who he really was inside. His interest was not a woman but a man. The guy moves Alfie’s hair out of his face ( Alfe believes that they guy is showing affection) but instead he punches Alfie in the face. A group of guys come out of nowhere and beat Alfie up because being gay was frowned upon. After the town got word of the news they were angry and disappointed. Many did not speak to him and his sister was hurt the most. She always dreamed of Alfie marrying and having his own family. She lived with Alfie but never knew who he really was. No one wanted any part of his play,he was beaten in the streets and shamed by others for being gay. He was just a man all alone with a secret still, he had feelings for Robbie the bus driver.
Alfie coming out about him being gay was a hard pill for some to swallow but they got over it and accepted him for who he was. As he stood in the church hall all of his friends, the passengers of the bus, started to walk in even Robbie, who he thought was disgusted at him for not only being gay but having feeling for him. They all showed up to help Alfie put his play together. After all Alfie was more than just someone that was gay, he was a great person with a love for the art of performance.
A Man of No Importance was produced in 1964. This was a time when wanting to date the same sex was frowned upon.
