During the thirties to fifties African Americans dealt with racial discrimination all across the United States, all African Americans were segregated from White Americans in the places they were allowed to go and where they were allowed to work. In the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, is about an African American family that is living on the South side of Chicago struggles with racial discrimination, the family is faced with racism in different ways throughout the play. Lorraine Hansberry was born around the time that racism was popular, and her family just like the family in A Raisin in the Sun struggled with discrimination. To illustrate, both Lorraine and Beneatha went through racism and sexism when they were trying to achieve their goals because they're both African American and women, and at that time it was hard for African American women you find a good paying job that we'll be able to support them and their family. Since neither of them could get a high paying job they both married African American men with high paying jobs because it was hard for them to get a job that will be able to support themselves. Lastly, Lorraine created the character Beneatha in the play to mimic herself. In particular, in a quote by Lauren Hansberry, she says, “Beneatha was me eight years ago”(McKissack). What does quote means is that Lorraine is comparing her younger self to Beneatha in the play, Lorraine is saying that how old Beneatha was how she acted when she was eight years younger. This quote really plays a role and how Lorraine put herself in her own play as a character that would act and have the same ideas as she would have at the time. In Conclusion, A Raisin in the Sun is a direct representation of the struggles that Loraine Hansberry faced during the thirties, forties, and fifties.
