Definition of APS (comprehension): An effective teacher will maintain a continuous awareness of students learning by allowing students the opportunity to participate in classroom activities. These activities would include discussions, projects, performances, assignments, and quizzes. When students are engaged in the activities, an effective teacher uses the appropriate questioning methods to sample some students to see if they have an understanding. The questions asked are appropriate to the content, activities, and the students. These questions will be used to determine if the students have an understanding of the main concept and skills. Any major work that students complete should have positive feedback. The feedback can be verbal or nonverbal. As long as the teacher gives the student feedback and it is customized to that particular student. The feedback should be helpful to the student. The feedback is precise, positive, and timely for each student. It is crucial to get students feedback in a specific time period so that they are able to correct their inaccuracies and their misinterpretations. An effective teacher’s feedback will strengthen and support the student’s knowledge. Student love to hear that they are doing something right. That encourages them to work harder and to keep moving forward. It also makes students excited to learn more. When students are having fun learning, they gain a better understand. This will enable the students to more easily master the content that was taught. According to Benjamin S. Bloom’s mastery learning, students who don’t achieve mastery (passing grade) should be given extra support and help until they can accomplish their goal. He also states that when teachers are completing their long range lesson plan (or planning a unit) that they should plan the units’ length based on how long it will take each student to learn and grasp the equivalent level of mastery. The tricky thing with Mastery learning is that it falls more in the hands of the teacher. When students aren’t successful its due to the teacher’s instruction. That is why it is so critical that teachers continuously must be aware of each and everyone of her student’s performance during her lessons. It is her job to guide her students and give them feedback to help them to reach mastery in every single subject she
