Cheever went to the Proctor’s house and told John Proctor “The girl, the Williams girl, Abigail Williams, sir. She sat to dinner in Reverend Parris’s house tonight and without word nor warnin’ she falls to the floor… and, stuck two inches in the flesh of her belly, he draw a needle out… She testify it were your wife’s familiar spirit pushed it in” (Miller 78-79). Cheever told John Proctor that Abigail started to scream out when she was having dinner at Reverend Parris’s house. Reverend Parris asked her how she was stabbed. Abigail then said that it was Elizabeth’s spirit that stabbed her. She was really just trying to get Elizabeth accused of being a witch so she could have John Proctor to herself. Abigail tried to make Elizabeth look bad when she told John Proctor “She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Abigail told John Proctor “I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near!... I saw your face when she put me out, and you loved me then and you do now!” (Miller 23). Abigail tried to get John to accept her and have feelings towards her because of their affair. John denied her and told her to forget him. Abigail then told John “I have a sense for heat, John, and yours has drawn me to my window, and I have seen you looking up, burning in your loneliness. Do you tell me you’ve never looked up at my window?” (Miller 24). Abigail told John that she knew that he was lonely and wanted her when he really didn’t. John then told her that he would rather cut his arm off than touch her again. In The Crucible it was Abigail Williams’s flaws – Dishonesty, Jealousy, and Lust – that led her to be most responsible for the tragedy of the witch-hunt in Salem. Abigail’s dishonesty by saying that she could see spirits of accused witches, jealousy towards Elizabeth because of her love of John Proctor, and her lust of John Proctor caused her to be the most responsible for the events that occurred. Her affair with John Proctor made her want to go through all sorts of crazy things just so she could be with him when he really didn’t even want her like she wanted
