Adapting To High School

Improved Essays
Do you think you'll struggle to adjust to high school? Although we like to think we’re ready for change, once it occurs it may seem much harder than we anticipated. I personally believe it falls upon the student's responsibility to prepare themselves. Whether you decide to seek out help from an adult or get organized there are many ways to handle the situation. I know I struggled to stay focused and turn my assignments in on time during my first year of high school. I suppose the hardest part of high school for many would be adapted to the new surroundings. Furthermore, I think the unknown is possibly the largest reason students worry about entering high school as well. By new surrounds, I specifically mean the people, the classes, and the …show more content…
I wasn’t paying enough attention and my grades suffered greatly because of this. I, however, choose to make a change, and so can anyone else. I feel it’s important to properly prepare students for their high school careers even if it’s at my own expense. I was failing tests because I didn’t study and I didn’t finish my homework at home. Before I even knew it, I was in a never-ending challenge to pull up my grades. I decided to get serious about my future by doing little things I felt needed to be changed. I would advise students coming into high school to consider the changes they should make. I would ask myself questions such as, “Am I trying my hardest?”, “Why aren’t I turning in my homework?” After identifying the things I knew I needed to change, I worked to improve myself. I took the extra time every night to finish my homework, I did lists of the things I needed to do, and I studied for my upcoming tests. I also tried to find a quiet place for me to concentrate on my work. Listening to music also allowed me to enjoy the time I spend doing my homework. I would mark off the tasks on my list as I completed them to keep myself …show more content…
Adapting to the new people and places around me was far less complicated. Although adjusting a new place can be quite hard it would differ between students. I was given a map towards the beginning of the year so I could find my new classes. I would advise students just beginning their high school career to do the same. Requesting a map so you can navigate the school is a great way to help avoid confusion. Personally, I got lost a couple times my first week of high school, but after I understood my map I no longer struggled to find my classes. I have to admit coming into high school there were far more students. The upperclassmen, however; were very supportive. Mentors were appointed to classes where they offered us advice. I think it’s important to open yourself up to new things while in high school. Joining clubs were a great way for me to meet other students. Many schools offer a variety of clubs to their students. I would advise students just beginning their high school career to be open to meeting new people. I struggled to make new friends, but once I reached out to others in the clubs I joined I met some of my best friends. I would also make an effort to get to know your

The goal of Boys & Girls Clubs is: “to provide a world-class Club experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who walks through our doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school, on time, with a plan for the future.” As a Club staff with little weight behind me to support this goal, it makes me a stone’s throw away from being labeled a hypocrite when I almost didn’t graduate from high school, let alone have a plan for the future. My childhood wasn’t glamorous enough to brag about, nor was it full of grief-stricken struggles that would warrant a tug at any heartstrings. It was simple. I grew up with both of my parents and my brother who was 4 years my senior.…

The idea that all people shall know what they'd like to do with their lives by the time they graduate high school is like expecting a baby to start walking right out of the womb, crazy. While some may figure it out early on in life most of the time that is not the case. As a senior in high school approaching the end, I for one can say that I am completely unsure about what I'd like to do after high school, which I strongly believe is a widespread conflict. For those who have their lives all planned out from a young age, their college life is all figured out, the classes they'll take, how long they'll be there, the degrees they earn, and of course where they will go after.…
