According to the American Nurses Credentialing Center (n.d.), now that the consensus model is developed, it will allow the advanced practice nurse “to align the interrelationships among licensure, accreditation, certification, and education.”…
Introduction Advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) are a vital part of the health system of the United States. APRNS are Master and post Masters level nurses providing care in specific roles for the patient population. APRNS are prepared by education and certification to assess, diagnose, and manage patient problems, order test, and prescribe medications. (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, n.d). Lyder (2012) discussed the growing need for an increased number of primary healthcare providers due to the shortage of primary care providers.…
There are differences and similarities between the Advanced Practice Nursing: An Integrative Approachan academic resource, the American Association of colleges of Nursing (AACN) DNP Essentials and the advance practice registered nurse (APRN) consensus model. According to the conceptual idea of Hamaric (2014) “Advanced practice nursing is the patient-focused application of an expanded range of competencies to improve health outcomes for patients and populations in a specialized clinical area of the larger discipline of nursing” (p. 71).…
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) is any nurse who has completed an accredited program in a master’s, post-master’s, or doctoral level (Mennella & Heering 2017). Mennella & Heering (2017), explained that an advanced practice registered nurse is divided into four roles: clinical nurse specialists (CNSs), certified nurse-midwives (CNMs), certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), and certified nurse practitioners (CNPs). Before an APRN graduate, it is imperative to apply information learned to develop a personal development plan (PDP). The PDP is a strategy on how the APRN will be presented genuinely and to know their importance within the health care system. Therefore, this blueprint will identify the regulations and requirements…
My name is Cattaleeya Chantaros. I am a Nurse Practitioner student at Florida Southern College. I am writing to express my support for allowing Nurse Practitioners (NPs) to provide services at the level of their clinical and education without the collaboration or supervision of a physician, including diagnosing patients, performing therapeutic procedures, prescribing drugs, medical devices and service and making independent decisions in treating health conditions in rural areas and underserved populations. Current Florida jurisdiction law requires APRNs signing collaborative practice agreements with a physician or have physician supervision to practice. Many have shown that APRNs provide safe, high-quality care without physician oversight.…
Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are the main solution to a much needed change in our healthcare system. I always believed that APRNs could provide effective medical care almost similar to physician at lower healthcare cost which is essential to the healthcare dilemma. After reading the excessive information provided by this course, I have new perception of why APRNs could be the key to change in our healthcare system. This perception is guided by the differences between an APRN and physician in the practice they utilize to provide healthcare. Physicians are trained in medical practice, focus of diagnosis and treatment of disease.…
The scope of practice for APRNs consists of “parameters within which advanced practice nurses may legally practice”, defining “what they can do for and with patients, what they can delegate, and when collaboration with others is required.” 1 This scope of practices varies not only across APRN roles – CNS, CRNA, NP, CNM – but also across individual states.1 For the FNP specialty, scope of practice entails diagnosis and management of illnesses in the primary care setting for individuals across the lifespan. The three benchmarks of APRN practice and education are advanced practice nurse competencies, professional advanced practice registered nurse competencies, and Master’s and Doctor of Nursing Practice Essentials.2 APN competencies, which distinguish…
One thing that I have learned is the importance of documentation and research to the future role of advance practice nurses. Advanced practice nurses, themselves, play a huge role in the outlook of this field. “We would all do well to remember this underlying philosophy of NP practice, then acquire and utilize skills that honor our nursing roots while providing the highest quality primary care”, Berg, Hicks and Roberts, 2017). Not only does quality of care impact the nurse practitioner (NP) profession, so does ethics and professionalism. Nurse practitioners have an obligation of acting as stewards in the NP role.…

The accelerated nursing program at University of Wisconsin-Madison caught my eye online. Previously, I have researched accelerated nursing programs around the country and, to my disappointment, did not find one at UW-Madison. This summer I was elated to find a new program starting at a university with a reputation for excellence. I understand the competitive nature of the nursing program at UW-Madison, which is why I am drawn to it. I desire a nationally recognized nursing degree because I intend to go onto additional schooling to open up doors in healthcare leadership.…
One option is to allow advanced nurse practitioners to practice independently by making it a national priority that the shortage of primary care providers is a priority affecting access and cost to care. Also, allowing the APNs greater autonomy by eliminating the requirement of the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) to reach consent from Board of Registration in Medication for advance practice regulations.…
Upon completion of my degree through Capella and successful passing of the Board Certified Advanced Diabetes Management exam, I plan to continue to practice in my clinic setting and immediately enroll in school to complete my final education goal to obtain my advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) in family medicine with focus in diabetes management. Despite completing a graduate level degree with Capella, my educational requirements to become an advanced nurse practitioner requires a graduate level degree from a nationally recognized accredited nursing program. Course requirements include three broad based courses in advanced physiology/pathophysiology, health assessment and advanced pharmacology with completion of a minimum of 500 facility –supervised clinical hours in the role and patient population (ANCC,…
Even though America’s first nursing schools were not established until 1873, about ten years after the civil war, nurse training had been discussed earlier. As one physician put it “No hospital, civilian or military…, could be well-managed without “a corps of female nurses.” (Rosenburg, 1) Yet, there was pros and cons of these types of programs, not only for the women who were a part of it, but also for the physicians at the hospital. Young woman was given a chance to work at a respectable career. However, these young women were usually middle class white women who’s family could afford to pay for the training.…
Position and Assumptions The role of the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) has two key dimensions in the healthcare arena. The first is knowledge management that includes generating evidence, gathering different types of knowledge, synthesizing knowledge, and interpreting and determining how to apply this knowledge. The second dimension is to promote the endorsement of knowledge by building the competencies of frontline nurses, engaging with nurses in problem solving and facilitating changes required to encourage best-practice guidelines. (Gerrish, et al. 2012).…
Nursing as a profession has the largest nation’s health care workforce with more than 3 million members. Being at the center of patient care, the part nurses play towards achieving the objectives set by the 2010 Affordable Care Act cannot be over emphasized. Some challenges has posed as an hindrance on the part of nursing which prevents the profession from meeting up with the pace of change and evolution presently going on within the healthcare settings and there is a need to overcome these obstacles. A report released in 2010 by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) highlighted the major changes that must occur in nursing so as to measure up with the nation’s healthcare system. Though the IOM is a nongovernmental and independent organization, it…
