Introduction: In the United States of America, sports are a monumental part of our culture. However, in the African-American disadvantaged communities it is the only way out of poverty. Moreover, many African-American parents in these communities obsess over their children playing sports at a very young age; therefore, they start breeding them to be sport focus almost at birth and the pressure to excel is high. Unfortunately, the constant emphasis on playing sports overpowers academics often leaving their young children believing that this is the only option for a successful future. According to Shaun Harper, Director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education and lead author of the study,” Black Male Student-Athletes and Racial Inequities in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), that colleges claim there are not enough qualified African-American male student; however, they are able to find enough qualified African-American athletes to play sports at their colleges (Harper ). NCAA is a billion dollar industry with football and basketball accumulating most of the profits (Latner 87). According to Angela Davis, “black bodies are considered dispensable within the “free world” but as a major source of profit in the prison world.” For more than 250 years, African-American bodies has been used as a form of machinery to produce and accumulate profits for White America. Moreover, the majority of African-American college athletes live in a world that emphasizes athletic over academics making it a higher priority (Latner 87). African-American athletes continue to produce and bring in the profit, in hopes of making it to the National Football League (NFL).
